I haven't got the FSX Steam version so can't verify, but have modified the files on many (non VAC/PB enabled) games including XP10 and Steam still accepts them. Modifying files should still be possible - this isn't VAC we're talking here, so you won't get banned for changing stuff. If you want to use the IVAO or other AI models of choice, that may be a different story because that involves editing the core FSX files which by doing so stops Steam from running the sim so I've heard. To answer your question Kieran, if you use something like vPilot which runs outside of the FSX root directory you shouldn't have any problems connecting to the network.
